GENEVIEVE HOUCK CHRISTENSON

VINCENT - Genevieve Christenson, 86, Vincent, IA, died Friday, March 20, at Clare Bridge Nursing Home in Asheville, N.C., following a lengthy illness. The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at the Gunderson Funeral Chapel with burial following in Newark Township Cemetery, Vincent, IA. The visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home and also from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday prior to the service.

Genevieve was born in Vincent, IA in 1922 and lived most of her life in the Vincent area. Genevieve graduated from Eagle Grove High School and Jr. College. Upon graduation from Jr. College she taught grades K-8 in a rural school just one mile northwest of Vincent. She married Ernest Christenson in 1941 and while he served in the U.S. army during World War II, she continued to teach. Following the war, Genevieve and Ernest moved to a farm one mile east of Vincent. Genevieve continued with her education at Drake University and graduated in 1966. She continued to teach in the Eagle Grove Community School System until she and her husband retired in 1984. The couple would then spend half of the year in IA and the other half in Mesa, AZ. When Ernest passed away in 1989 Genevieve moved to Lake Panorama to be next to her sister, Yvonne, and lived there until moving to Friendship Haven in 2005. Genevieve suffered a stroke in 2007 and then moved to North Carolina to be near her son, Michael.

Survivors include her son, Dr. Michael Christenson, Asheville, N.C., two grandsons, Mark Christenson, London, England, and Matthew Christenson, Portland, OR., two great grand daughters, Hannah and Clare Christenson, and sister Yvonne Book, Lake Panorama, IA,. Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband Ernest, son Mark, and her parents Cleo and Anna Houck.
