LaVonne Dorothy Peer, age 87 of Yankton passed away on January 1, 2009 at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton, SD. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 17th, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Yankton with Rev. Dave Lund officiating. Visitations will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton is in charge of the arrangements.

LaVonne Dorothy Peer, born 2 April 1921 to William Henry Helmke and Hilda Helena Boge at Renwick, Iowa. After graduation from Renwick High School in 1938, she attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls and worked as a secretary for the Algona Insurance Agency and for a mental health clinic in Yankton. LaVonne was a superb cook and homemaker; and a wonderful mother. On December 31, 1942, LaVonne was united in marriage to Corwin Callesen Peer at Parkersburg Iowa. LaVonne and Corwin resided in Algona and Ogden Iowa and in Yankton South Dakota. LaVonne is survived by her son, Gary (Marie) Peer of Craig, CO; a grandson, Adam Peer, of Overland Park, KS; two sisters, Gretchen Rininger (Oren) of Schaller, Iowa; Janice Basler (Gary) of Renwick, Iowa; and one brother, Jerry Helmke (Mardelle) of Humboldt, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Carmen Peer Loux (Charles) of Sheldon, Iowa, and Irene Larsen Peer (Norman) of Clarion Iowa; as well as 8 nephews and 13 nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one brother, Norman Helmke (LaVonne); one sister, Kathryn Duffy (Jim); and two brothers-in-law, Norman Peer (Irene) and Charles Loux (Carmen).
