SPIRIT LAKE - Dr. Kurt J. Sunner, 70, passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge. The funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. The visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Gunderson Funeral Home. Kurt was born in Fort Dodge on August 3, 1938 to Carl and Helen Sunner. He grew up in Eagle Grove and graduated from Eagle Grove High School. He attended and played football for Coe College. He originally worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad and later opened his own successful optometry practice for 17 years in Laurens, IA, after attending optometry school in Memphis, TN. He enjoyed fishing, boating, NASCAR, football, traveling, and following the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds. He also enjoyed going to the Casino and playing the penny slots. Kurt is survived by his wife, Betty Marie Sunner; daughter, Kim Sunner of Snoqualmie, Wash.; sons, Kurt E. (Machelle) Sunner of Fort Dodge and Jeff Sunner of Phoenix, Ariz.; sister, Helen Chapman of Las Vegas, Nev.; brother, Paul Sunner of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Courtney, Christopher, Christina, Krystal, Adam and Whitney; great-grandchildren, Mateo and Avery. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Helen; and brothers, Harold, Gerald and Gordon. Memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association P.O.
