Richard F. “Dick” McDermott (1925-2009)

WATERLOO - Richard F. “Dick” McDermott, 83, of Waterloo, died Monday Jan. 26, at Cedar Valley Hospice of natural causes. He was born June 29, 1925, in Mason City, son of Christopher and Mary Agnes Clark McDermott. He married Paula Pieper on June 7, 1947, in Fort Dodge. She died Sept. 27, 2007. Mr. McDermott was a graduate of Eagle Grove High School. He was employed at John Deere as a supervisor, retiring in 1982. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a staff sergeant, and was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, John Deere Supervisors Club, Izaak Walton and a Red Cross Disaster volunteer. Survived by: a son, Richard J. (Carol) of Cedar Falls; three daughters, Paulette M. (Jed) Poland of Cedar Falls, Christine E. McDermott of Wylie, Texas, and Deborah A. Brown of Waterloo; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Terry J. (Geri) of Rogers, Ark. and two sisters, Colleen (Jimmy) Johnson of Clarion and Donna Jean (Fory) Zody of Houston. Preceded in death by: a son, Gary M.; and a brother, John.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also an hour before services Friday at the church. Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
