Richard Henry (Jack) Schaffer was born on August 21, 1936 at LuVerne, Iowa, to Henry N. and Myrtle Irene Fosnaugh Schaffer. He was baptized into the Methodist Church. Jack received his education at the Plum Creek Country School northeast of Algona. After his schooling, Jack worked as a farmhand for area farmers. At age 21, Jack lost his leg in a farm accident. He worked for a time at the University Hospitals in Iowa City. He then moved to Renwick, Iowa and worked as an assistant cheese maker in the Renwick Cheese factory. Jack then owned and operated restaurants in Renwick and later at Holmes, Iowa. He then retired, due to failing health. Jack moved to Clarion in the early 1980's. Jack loved playing cards, golfing, bowling and fishing. He also enjoyed cooking and making cakes and bread. Jack loved making Christmas treats for his friends and family. Jack died on Thursday, March 3, 2005, at the Wright Medical Center in Clarion, Iowa. He was 68. He is survived by his sisters and brother; Fern Thompson and husband, Robert, Algona, Iowa, Robert Schaffer and wife, Betty, Clarion, Iowa, Mildred Thorsbakken, Emmetsburg, Iowa and Roxie Matthews and husband, Robert, Loveland, Colorado. Also surviving are 2 foster children. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Helen Irene Schaffer and Alice Shipler and his brother-in-law, Roger Thorsbakken.
