Howard E. Ballard, 76, Fort Dodge, IA, died June 5, 1993 at Trinity Regional Hospital. Services held at Hastings Funeral Home, Perry, IA. Burial was in Violet Hill Cemetery, Perry, IA. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Bohner Ballard; daughters, Judy Ballard Egesdal, Greentop, Miss., and Janis Ballard Olson, Fort Dodge; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a sister, Patricia Ballard Jackovich of Perry. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallie E. and Sada Andrews Ballard, and one brother.
Howard E. Ballard was born July 18, 1916, at Minburn, Dallas County, Iowa to Wallie E. and Sada Andrews Ballard. Howard was raised on a farm near Minburn, Iowa. He graduated from Washington Township High in 1935. Howard, a WW II veteran of the U.S. Army, served as a front-line cook with the 168th Infantry Regiment of the 34th Infantry (Red Bull Division). Howard's unit landed in Northern Ireland in March 1942 to prepare for the invasion in Nov 1942 of North Africa. Howard, and the 34th Infantry Division saw action in major campaigns in Africa, Sicily and Italy. Following his discharge in 1944, he was married to Virginia May Bohner, by Rev Rogers, in the home of Virginia's Uncle Fred Bohner in Des Moines, IA. The couple lived in Des Moines, where he was employed with Lally's Wholesale Auto Parts. After moving to Perry, he worked at Herring Whisler Auto Parts and later Montgomery Ward. In 1950, Howard, Virginia and daughter Judy, moved to Coon Rapids where Howard and Virginia owned and operated Ballard's Mobil Service Station and Grocery. In the early 1960's they returned to Perry where Howard was employed in the Maintenance Department of the Woodward State Mental Hospital. In 1971 they moved to Eagle Grove Iowa and later to Ft. Dodge. Howard retired in 1985 after working 13 years at Ridgewood Bowling Lanes in Ft. Dodge, Iowa.
