Kenneth Spellmeyer, the son of William A. and Edna L. (Ulstad) Spellmeyer, was born February 15, 1945, in Woolstock, Iowa. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth, graduating from Eagle Grove High School in 1963. Spud served in the National Guard after high school. On February 7, 1969, Spud married Marilyn Chapman at the United Methodist Church in Webster City, they were divorced in 1981. On June 3, 1983, he married Jane Berry at the Homer Methodist Church, they were divorced in 1996. Spud married Maurene Olson on November 15, 1996, in Thor. Spud lived in the Woolstock area most of his life until moving to Eagle Grove in 2005. He worked at Morton’s Frozen Foods, Franklin’s both in Webster City, for Spellmeyer Electric with his brother, Kastler Tiling in Woolstock, owned “Spud’s in Woolstock, helped farm with his other father, Victor Claude and the Eagle Grove Community Schools as Director of Buildings & Grounds for 22 years, retiring in 2007, due to his health. Spud was a member of the United Methodist Church. He was one of the founders of the “Wild Bunch” in Woolstock, served as a volunteer Fire Fighter, and served on the Woolstock City Council and as Mayor of Woolstock. He was also a member of Woolstock Legion and the UAW at Franklin’s. Spud also enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, camping, and bird watching.
Spud passed away on Saturday, January 31, 2009, at the Hamilton County Hospital in Webster City, at the age of 63 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Jimmy, Roger and Delmar and a sister, Marilyn Gatewood. Survivors include by his wife, Maurene Spellmeyer of Eagle Grove; son, Steve Spellmeyer and wife Deb of Woolstock, daughter, Brooke Tokheim and Brandon Snyder of Thor, son, Travis Tokheim and wife Bailey of Eagle Grove, daughter, Bethany Spellmeyer and Travis Boege of Reinbeck, sons, Andy Spellmeyer of Eagle Grove and Tom Spellmeyer of Webster City and daughter, Katie Spellmeyer of Eagle Grove; grandchildren: Dustin Spellmeyer, Megan Spellmeyer and friend Jake Anderson and Drew and Graceyn Snyder; great-grandchildren, Landon and Kaleb Anderson and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 4, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove with Pastor Michael Agnew officiating. Visitation is Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove. Memorials will be left to the discretion of the family.
