November 30, 2003Virginia Ann Staples, 77, died of a heart attack on Wednesday, November 26 at her home. Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 2 at the Federated United Church of Christ in Jewell with Pastor Robert Williams officiating. Burial of the cremains will be at a later date in the Cass Cemetery in Webster City.
Virginia was born on February 15, 1926 in Blairsburg Township, Hamilton County to Thomas Elick and Ellen (Shafer) Hudson. She received her education at Blairsburg #4 School and was a 1943 graduate of Webster City High School. Virginia married George W. Staples on May 14, 1946 in Jewell. She and George farmed from 1949 to 1972, when they moved to Jewell. Virginia retired in 1988 from the ISU Library after many years of employment. She was a member of the Federated United Church of Christ in Jewell and served as the chairman of the Lords Cupboard Food Pantry since 1991. She also delivered Meals on Wheels and served on the Elderbridge Agency Advisory Council and was a caregiver. She enjoyed reading, flower gardening, and being with her grandchildren. Virginia is survived by two daughters, Connie Carlson of Estherville and Georgia Widick of Badger two sons, Monte Staples of Ankeny and Randy Staples of Webster City, nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two sisters, Darlene Ranger of Nevada and Jean Johnson of Spencer and a brother, Duane Hudson of Wooster, OH. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents her husband, George on July 17, 2001 and a brother, Donald Hudson. A memorial fund has been established and gifts may be sent to PO Box 154, Jewell, IA, 50130. Becker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
