RUTHVEN -- Former Ayrshire resident Joseph M. Helgevold of Ruthven died Sunday, Dec. 11, 1994, at the Ruthven Community Care Center. He was 84. Funeral services for Mr. Helgevold were held Wednesday, Dec. 14, at Zion Lutheran Church in Ruthven. The Rev. Luther Thoresen officiated. Burial was in Silver Lake Cemetery, Ayrshire. The Martin Funeral Home in Ruthven was in charge of arrangements. Honorary bearers were Eugene Berbers, Duane Larson and Vic Lothe. Casket bearers were Bob Bledsoe, Joe Helgevold, Doug Helgevold, Scott Nading, Keith Sadler and Jim Helgevold.
Joseph M. Helgevold was born Nov. 4, 1910, in Eagle Grove, the son of Hans and Belle (Stensland) Helgevold. He attended school in Eagle Grove and continued his education at a business school in Fort Dodge. On Dec. 20, 1934, Joe Helgevold and Maxine Schaeffer were married at Eagle Grove. The couple farmed in the Eagle Grove area, then lived in the communities of High View, Ringsted and Fenton where Mr. Helgevold managed grain elevators. He became manager for the Ayrshire Elevator in 1942 and held that position until 1955. He was a seed salesman until 1972. Joe Helgevold was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ruthven, and he sang in the church choir. He served as secretary of the Ayrshire School Board and was a member of the Commercial Club and the Ayrshire Fire Department. Mr. Helgevold was an Honorary Chapter Farmer of FFA. He enjoyed gardening and fishing.
Surviving are three children, Joseph Mark Helgevold of New Richmond, Wisconsin, Janis Maguire of Wangaratta, Victoria, Australia, and Dr. David Helgevold of Hawarden; ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Also surviving are a daughter-in-law, Eunice Helgevold of Oelwein; and a brother, Carroll Helgevold of North Carolina. Mr. Helgevold was preceded in death by his wife, Max, on Nov. 21, 1994; a son, Paul; a grandson, David Lowell; four sisters, Bess, Rose, Bernice and Thelma; and three brothers, Howard, Burt and Art.
