RENWICK - Vivian V. Rockwood, 89, of Renwick, died Monday (Nov. 20, 2000) in Johnson City, Tenn. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Renwick, with Pastor Jerry Newland, officiating. Burial will be in Vernon Township Cemetery in rural Hardy. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Renwick, with a 7 p.m. Eastern Star service.

Vivian Valera Rockwood was born on April 9, 1911 in Alexander, Iowa, the daughter of Dr. Merle Clinton and Myrtle Mae (Davison) Rockwood. Her early life was spent in Iowa. Following receipt of her B.A. degree from Iowa State University in 1933, Rockwood began her career as a high school home economics teacher. Later, she received an M.A. degree (1938) from Columbia University and began teaching full-time at the college-level. She received a professional diploma from Columbia in 1963 and became a Registered Dietitian in 1969. From 1938 to 1942, she was home economics and dietician instructor at Keene State College in Keene, New Hampshire. She served from 1953-1958 as professor and head of the Home Economics Department at Wichita State University. From 1958 until her retirement in 1976, she worked as a Professor and Chairwoman of the Department of Home Economics East Tennessee State University. She worked second jobs during most of her life as a hospital dietitian, Owner and Director of Camp Alamoosook (East Orland, Maine) and Cliff Rock Dining Inn (Troy, New Hampshire), among other positions. She was active in several professional and civil associations, serving as an officer in most of the organizations.

Rockwood had a lifelong interest in her family history. She began by researching her family’s involvement in the American Revolution, which led to her joining the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1939. Her many years of genealogical research culminated with the publication of this research in her book Four Centuries of American Descendent of Richard Rockwood of Dorchester 1633, Braintree 1636, Massachusetts: A Family Genealogy in 2000. Throughout her life, Ms. Rockwood received regional, national, and international awards, honors, and recognitions for professional/educational development and community service.
