On Tuesday, January 13, 2009, Virgil A. Tommy Thompson peacefully passed on and joined his parents and siblings with the Lord. Funeral services for Mr. Thompson 87, of Lufkin, will be held Saturday, January 17, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Sam Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park. Mr. Thompson was born January 24, 1921 in Eagle Grove, Iowa to Amos and Catherine (Lonne) Thompson and died January 13, 2009, in a local hospital. A graduate of Laurel High School, of Laurel, Montana, Mr. Thompson was working for the Forest Service when he enlisted in the U. S. Navy on December 16, 1941, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He served his country for six years, most of which was in the South Pacific on Destroyer Escorts. He ranked as a Chief Petty Officer at the completion of his service. During that time he met Robbie Owens in Orange, Texas and they were married in Boston, MA in 1945. After a short stay in southern California, they moved to Texas. Mr. Thompson worked with Mr. Owens, owner of Lufkin Pine Lumber Company. He later opened the first mobile home dealership in Lufkin, Tommy's Mobile Homes. He purchased AAA Pest Control where he and his son, Kenneth, served their customers for 19 years. His son, Kenneth, now owns the company and continues their business tradition. Mr. Thompson found his greatest joy in his love for his wife and four children. He cherished time together with them above all. Those who knew him best, would agree that he enjoyed life and wanted to share that joy with those around him. He was baptized March 27, 1921. He was a member of Lufkin's First Baptist Church for over 35 years and active in the Adult 7 Berean Class. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Robbie Thompson of Lufkin; son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Merry Thompson of Lufkin; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and JerriLynn Thompson of Palestine; daughter and son-in-law, Dian and Gary Ogden of Arlington; daughter Carol Thompson of Lufkin; grandchildren, Alyssa Minshew of Lufkin, Amanda Phillips of Dallas, David Bennett of Athens, serving in Korea, Alissa Bennett Thompson of Palestine, Jamie Thompson and Jeremy Thompson of Palestine, Tyler Ogden, Cameron Ogden and Hunter Ogden of Arlington; and great-grandchildren, Bryce and Blake Minshew of Lufkin. Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by his parents, Amos Thompson and Catherine Thompson Hanson; brother, Gordon Thompson; and sister, Thelma Aho. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association, Greater East Texas Chapter, P. O. Box 630636, Nacogdoches, Texas 75963-0636. Pallbearers will be Gary Ogden, Tyler Ogden, Richard Minshew, Danny Phillips, Greg Strait and Roger Bollier. Honorary pallbearers will be Earnest Wingate and the members of the Berean Class of Lufkin's First Baptist Church. Gipson Funeral Home; Bill Swearingen, Director
