BELMOND - Thelma Nicolet, 83, of Belmond, died Wednesday (Dec. 3, 2008) at the Belmond Health Care Center. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Thornton, with Pastor Milton D. Johnson, presiding. Interment will be at Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, 107 N. Second St. in Thornton.

Thelma Katherine (Floy) Nicolet was born Aug. 30, 1925, at Thornton, the daughter of Peter and Cecelia (Bertelsen) Floy. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thornton. She attended school in Thornton and graduated with the Class of 1943. She then attended Upper Iowa University where she received her teaching degree. She taught school in Swaledale, Ventura, and Thornton. On June 13, 1948, she was united in marriage to Dwain Nicolet at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Thornton. To this marriage three children were born: Cindy (Jim) Petersen, Jo Ellen (Larry) Swenson, and one son Scott (Christine) Nicolet. They lived on their farm west of Thornton for 49 years. In 1975 she was employed at the First State Bank of Thornton, where she worked until her retirement in 1991. They moved to Belmond in September of 1997. They enjoyed many winters in Texas and summers at Leech Lake in Minnesota. Thelma's hobbies were gardening, baking, reading, fishing, and boating. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and especially the last five months with Kinslie Jo her youngest great-grandchild.

She is survived by her three children, Cindy (Jim) Petersen, of Des Moines, Jo Ellen (Larry) Swenson, of Belmond, and Scott (Christine) Nicolet of Round Rock, Texas. Thelma has seven grandchildren, Jennifer (Max) Peterson, Angela Heiden, Heather Swenson, Michael Petersen, Amy (Wes) Burrell, Brian Nicolet, and Sarah Nicolet; seven great-grandchildren; and brother, Charles (Janice) Floy from Hot Springs Village, Ark. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dwain; sisters, Seydell Hagen, and Bonnie Hagen. Retz-Grarup Funeral Home.
