Harold Eugene ELBERG

Harold Eugene Elberg, the son of Carl H. and Lula M. (Strait) Elberg, was born on June 11, 1936, in Dayton Township, Eagle Grove, Iowa. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth, graduating from Eagle Grove High School in 1954. Harold served two years in the US Army, stationed at a missile site at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. He worked for many years for Farmland Industries in Colorado, Minnesota and Eagle Grove. In 1956 Harold was united in marriage with Jo Umstead. The couple made their home in Eagle Grove. In 1972, he established Elberg Construction. His master craftsmanship done by “Harold and his Hammer” is apparent in many homes in the area. Harold retired in 1998 and continued building at his home, gardening and supplying tomatoes and homemade picante sauce to everyone. In 2006 he became ill and had a long courageous battle with lung cancer. Harold died in the arms of his family. Harold passed away on Tuesday, November 25, 2008, at the Rotary Ann Nursing Home in Eagle Grove, at the age of 72 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Charles and his grandson, Alec Lawson. Survivors include his wife, Jo Elberg of Eagle Grove; sons, Jon Elberg of Eagle Grove and Marty Elberg and wife, Susie of Eagle Grove; two grandsons, Taylor Elberg and Kaleb Lawson; sister, Marjorie Parsons of Edina, MN; sisters in law Norene “Mike” Elberg of Eagle Grove, Jeanne Spangler and husband Dean of Rocky Mount NC; brothers in law, Bill Umstead and wife Mary of Albert Lea, MN and Monte Umstead and wife Joyce of Eagle Grove; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2008 at 11:30 am, at United Church of Christ in Eagle Grove with Pastor James Cunningham officiating. Visitation will be 9:00 AM Saturday until service time at the United Church of Christ, Eagle Grove. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family. Foust Funeral Home of Eagle Grove in charge of arrangements.
