Walter E. Sampson, 83, of Fort Dodge, died September 29, 2006 at his home. Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 7, 2006 at Gunderson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Phil Somsen officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Full military honors will be presented by the VFW Post 1856. Private interment will be held in Vernon Township Cemetery, Humboldt County.

Walter E. Sampson, the son of Herman and Lydia (Geyer) Sampson, was born on November 12, 1922 in O'Neill, Nebraska. As a child he moved with his family to Fort Dodge where he attended school. On November 28, 1942, Walter was united in marriage to Betty Reed in Yuma, Arizona. The couple made their home in Fort Dodge. Walter later served in the Army with Company B 405th Infantry during WWII from 1944 - 1946. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge for his service. Walter was employed with Hormel's in the sales department for over 33 years, retiring in 1981. Walter was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion and past commander of the Boat Club. He enjoyed spending time hunting, fishing and golfing.

Walter is survived by his wife Betty; his children, Linda Hempfling of Hawthorne Woods, IL, Jill Fritts of Cary, IL, Walter R. Sampson, of Johnston; 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Lorne, Robert and Richard and his sister Bonnie Pace. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed towards Hospice of Fort Dodge.
