Marie Ione Hunst, the daughter of George and Catherine (Johnson) Hunst, was born Oct. 1, 1915, in Cartwright, N.D. As a young child, she moved with her family to Iowa where she received her education through the Belmond area rural schools. Marie was a life long homemaker, loving wife to her husbands, who all preceded her in death, including, Joe Zieger who died during his military service shortly after their marriage, Charles Pratt, with whom she bore a son, Wayne, and later, Hank Schlagel, with whom she farmed in rural Dows for many years before moving to Belmond in the mid 1970's following their retirement from the family farm. Hank later passed away and Marie spent the remainder of her life in Belmond. In earlier years she had worked for a time at the Woolen Mills in Des Moines. Marie's focus in life was dedicated to her family, her church and God. Marie was an independent spirit who treasured living in her own home. She enjoyed cleaning, cooking, tidying drawers and mostly spending time with her family and dear friends. Above all, Marie was good and kind. She always had a smile on her face and never had a negative thing to say about anyone or anything. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her and loved her. Marie enjoyed any opportunity that brought with it the chance to go places. She relished the simple things in life, whether, it included her daily journal entries, time spent watching her favorite TV shows, "The Price is Right," "Wheel of Fortune" and "Lawrence Welk," listening to her favorite music, senior dining, card clubs, daily phone calls and weekend visits with her granddaughter, Sena, or just being with her family. Marie was easily pleased. All who had the privilege of crossing her life journey will remember her as a hardworking, mild mannered, gentle, and caring lady.

Marie's legacy will live on in the lives of her survivors, which include her son, Wayne Pratt and his companion, Jody Tripp and her daughter, Edde, Dows; Marie's granddaughter, Sena Pratt, Cedar Rapids; grandson, Michael Pratt and his wife, Taryn, and their daughter, Kamdyn, Pheonix City, Ala.; step-sons, Chuck Schlagel, wife, Mary Ann, Maryland, and family; and Dennis Schlagel, wife, Jan, Bloomington, Ill, and family; also many other extended family members and friends. Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Joe, Charles, and Hank; her brothers, Glenn, and Raymond "Cooney" and her sister, Betty Lou "Dixie." Andrews Funeral Home, Belmond.
