Former Belmond resident and mother of Mona McLaughlin of Belmond.

Mary Thompson, 85, of Ventura died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at Muse Norris Hospice in Mason City. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 5, at Ward-VanSlyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with Pastor Randy Vaage of Evangelical Free Church of Clear Lake officiating. Interment will be at the Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme. Visitation will be Wednesday, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Mary Kissel was born November 9, 1915 at Rockford, daughter of Earl and Edith Kissell and later a step-daughter of Art Awe. She married Ray Thompson May 3, 1931 in Mason City. They lived in Mason City until 1948 when they moved to Belmond. Mary cooked at the Town House Cafe and Alderson's Cafe in Belmond. In 1968 they moved to Ventura where they owned and operated Elm Bend Resort and Cafe next to Clear Lake; moving back to Belmond for a few years; and then back to Ventura in 1976 where she had been living. Mary and her husband Ray liked fishing and snowmobiling; and Mary enjoyed gardening and feeding the birds.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray in 1995; her parents; and two sisters. Mary is survived by three children and their spouses, Ramona (Mona) and Joe McLaughlin of Belmond, Marlys and Bob Pliley of Ventura, and Dan and Dee Thompson of Clear Lake; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Joey and Renee McLaughlin of Belmond, Jon McLaughlin of Melborne, Australia, Tony and Gayla McLaughlin of Belmond, Mark and Patti McLaughlin of Clear Lake, Diana (Pliley) and Ron Dogotch of Houston, TX, and Jeff Pliley of Cold Springs, MN, Annette (Thompson) and David Lee of Des Moines, and Kelli Thompson of Clear Lake; 11 great grandchildren, Erin (McLaughlin) Strong, Chris Philben, Amanda Philben, Tonisha McLaughlin, Chase McLaughlin, Jordan McLaughlin, Zacharia McLaughlin, Heather (Dogotch) Lehrmann, Amanda Dogotch, Kim Dogotch, and Heidi Dogotch.
