Gertrude Thompson, age 97, of the Madrid Home in Madrid, and formerly of 1223 Union Street in Boone, died October 7, 2008, at the Madrid Home. Her body has been cremated and a memorial service will be Monday, October 13, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at the Chapel at the Madrid Home with Rev. Carla Werre officiating. Burial of her cremains will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove on Monday afternoon.
Gert was born in Eagle Grove on June 29, 1911, the daughter of Seward and Randa (Larson) Thompson. She graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1930, the Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls in 1938, and graduated from Drake University in 1966 with a degree in Education. Gert was a special education teacher and touched many lives. She taught in Boxholm, Armstrong, Fort Dodge, Boone, and South Hamilton. She taught in Boone from 1957 to 1962, and then taught at South Hamilton from 1962 until she retired in 1976. Gert was dedicated to teaching. She enjoyed crafts, baking, cooking and trying new recipes.
Gert is preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Marshall, Tillman, and Gordon Thompson. She is survived by her lifelong friend, Mary McAlpine of Madrid; special friend, Laura Anderson of Boone; two cousins, Robert Thompson of Storm Lake and Maynard Thompson of Phoenix, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Chapel of the Madrid Home on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the 10:00 a.m. service. Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall is in charge of the arrangements.Boone News, Iowa
