1922-2005

Hilbert L. "Hil" Schliske, 83, of Torrington died Oct. 19 at the Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, Neb. He had cancer of the larynx diagnosed in 1987 and survived for 18 years. He was born Oct. 8, 1922, in Vincent, Iowa, the son of Paul and Hattie (Hansch) Schliske. The family moved to the Burns-Carpenter area when Hilbert was two years old. He grew up and attended school at Carpenter where he played basketball and graduated from Carpenter High School in 1942. In October of 1942, Hil joined the United States Army Air Force where he served as a radio operator and gunner on a bomber plane. While flying over England, he had to bail out of the aircraft and he received a Purple Heart. Hil was honorably discharged in 1945 and returned to Burns. On May 18, 1946, he married Lois Springer at Burns and the couple moved to Cheyenne for a year before returning to the Carpenter area where they farmed for three years. Hil then worked for the Carpenter school system for 14 years. In 1964, they moved to Huntley where he worked for the Huntley School for three years. A highlight of his years working for the school districts was that it allowed him to follow his son Dennis' athletic activities. In 1967 Hil and Lois moved to Torrington where he was a truck driver for Holly Sugar Corporation for 23 years. He retired in 1990. Following retirement, they traveled some, and he enjoyed woodworking. For Hil and Lois, Christmastime was one of the most important family holidays when as many family members as possible could be together. Hil made up family games that were challenging, educational, spiritual and fun. His creativity and several months of research brought a memorable experience to the family that will be carried on for several generations. Hil will be remembered as a very private man with a great sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife, Lois of Torrington; son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Connie Schliske of Virginia Beach, Va.; daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Eric Kufeldt of Centennial, Colo.; a brother, Robert Schliske of Cheyenne; two sisters, Esther Hagemann of Denver, and Eleanor Romsa of Los Angeles; seven grandchildren, Douglas, Matthew, Nicholas, Amber and Andrew Schliske and Joel (Molly) and Kevin (Rachel) Kufeldt; and two great-grandchildren, Trinady and Brady Kufeldt. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Elmer and Ronald and two sisters, Edna Gallina and Elsie Penwell. Funeral services were Oct. 24 at Our Savior Lutheran Church with Rev. Marvin Temme officiating. The casket was closed and burial was with military honors. Burial was in the Valley View Cemetery.
