Richard M. "Red" Howell, 81, of Newton died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008, at Hospice of Jasper County's Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. Memorial services will beat 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Randall McNeer of Reasnor United Methodist Church officiating. The family will greet friends with a lunch following the burial which will be immediately following the service at Newton Union Cemetery. Memorials may be left in Richard's name at the funeral home.

Born Nov. 27, 1926, in Wright County, he was the son of Marvin Hewith and Dorothy Elizabeth (Wade) Howell. A graduate of the Colfax High School, he grew up in the Colfax area and spent a lot of time fishing the Skunk River. Richard was united in marriage to Florence Smyth on July 3, 1953, in Newton. He started working in the yard at Maytag when he was 17. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he worked in dishwasher assembly at Maytag. He was a member of the VFW 1655. Richard enjoyed fishing, antiquing, especially for depression glass, camping, and family vacations. He loved spending time with his dog, Brandy, and was an Iowa Hawks and Chicago Cubs fan. Leonard Banghart was his longtime fishing buddy. Richard served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and was stationed in Hawaii, Shanghai, China, and was a part of the occupying force in Japan.

Survivors include his wife, Florence Howell of Newton; two sons, William (Jean) Howell of Des Moines and Scott Howell of Newton; one daughter, Kimberly (Kirk) Albright of Fargo, N.D.; four grandchildren; Jordan, Justin, Jennie, and Amanda; four step grandchildren, Rob, Crystal, Alex and James; 12 step great-grandchildren; one sister, Joann Cummings of Colfax; and one sister-in-law, Lorraine Howell of Walnut. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Rhodonna Eileen; two sisters, Darlene Plummer and Marjorie Ingraham; and a brother, Marvin J. Howell.
