A longtime Des Moines Register farm editor and one of the most influential Iowans in the field of agriculture, Don Muhm, has died. Muhm covered some of the most important stories in agriculture for 33 years before retiring in 1993 and became a legend at the newspaper.

He died of a heart attack at his summer home in Spirit Lake last Tuesday. Muhm oversaw coverage at the Register when the newspaper devoted enormous resources to agriculture in the state. He was involved in daily coverage of the farm financial crisis of the 1980s, explored innovations in agriculture and had countless friends and news sources around the state.

As high-profile as Muhm was, he had time for anyone who called or stopped by to talk to him. When he retired from the newspaper in 1993, he wrote in a column that his job was easy compared to the work of the people he covered. “As my dad used to say about my farm-writing career, `It must be a lot easier writing about it than doing it.’ “

He was president of North American Agricultural Journalists in 1970 and a three-time winner of its national writing contest.
