Joyce Arlene Edwards Spencer, 75, of Navarre, Fla., died at a local hospital Friday, August 18, 2000 of natural causes. Mrs. Spencer was born Joyce Arlene Edwards in Union, Iowa on April 1, 1925. Her family moved to a farm near Clarion, Iowa. After graduating from Clarion High School, she attended the Iowa Methodist School of Nursing in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1946 she graduated as a Registered Nurse. She married Marion Spencer on September 29, 1946. Mrs. Spencer began her career as a nurse at the Clarion Hospital. They operated a farm in Dows, Iowa for several years. They moved from Dows, Iowa to Neillsville, Wis. in 1959. Mrs. Spencer continued her career at the Neillsville Hospital, where she held the positions of the Director of Nurses and the Head of Infection Control. She volunteered with the Neillsville 4-H Club as a project leader from 1961 until 1986. Mrs. and Mrs. Spencer retired in 1989 and moved to Navarre. Mrs. Spencer was a life-long member of the Methodist Church and at the time of her passing, she was a member of the Navarre United Methodist Church. She was actively involved with the Ft. Walton Beach Camilla Club from 1990 to 1995.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Marion Spencer; three sons and one daughter, Duane, James and Walter Spencer and Mary Redig. Two sisters survive her, Sylvis Flett and Ruth Toulouse. She was blessed with 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Monday, August 21, 2000 at the Navarre United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Rose Lawn Cemetery. Viewing will be held at Rose Lawn Funeral Home from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Donations may be made in her name to the American Diabetes Society.
