EAGLE GROVE - Allen David Strain, the son of Jess G. and Nellie M. (Middleton) Strain, was born August 6, 1918, in Eagle Grove, Iowa. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth. On May 23, 1939, Allen was united in marriage with Phyllis M. McCormick in Fort Dodge. The couple made their home in Eagle Grove. Allen served in the United States Navy during W.W.II, from April of 1944 until March of 1945. Allen worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad as a conductor for 41 years, retiring in 1983. Allen was a member of the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove, the American Legion for 43 years and the United Transportation Union for 55 years. He enjoyed golfing, bicycling and spending time with family.

Allen passed away on Sunday, October 5, 2008, at Careage of Clarion at the age of 90 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Larry Strain; sisters, Phyllis McGowan and Janet Clabaugh; brothers, Milton Strain, John Strain and Jack Strain and a son-in-law, Chuck Lackore. Allen is survived by his wife, Phyllis Strain; son, Scott E. Strain of Eagle Grove; daughters: Peggy S. Lackore of Clarion, Sandi K. Baldus and husband John of Alleman, and Kayleen A. Chamberlin and husband Joe of Eagle Grove; daughter in law, Charlene Strain of Mason City; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Maxine Helgeson of Wisconsin, brother, George Strain and wife Babe, and sister, Jean Thomas all of Seattle, Wash., and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 9, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove with Rev. L. J. Hartley officiating. Visitation is Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove. Memorials will be left to the discretion of the family.
