MASON CITY— Lena M. Lock, 96, of Mason City, died Monday (Jan. 24, 2005) at Good Shepherd Health Center. Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Willowbrook Drive in Mason City, with the Rev. Terry Hamilton-Poore officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 North Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City. A memorial fund has been established in Lena's name.
Lena was born Feb. 4, 1908, the daughter of Peter H. and Gesena (Wolters) Pals in Wright County. She was a graduate of Meservey High School and attended Central College in Pella. Lena then began schooling at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught school in Cerro Gordo County until she was married. Lena was united in marriage to Safford W. Lock on Nov. 24, 1937, in Meservey. Safford and Lena owned and operated Lock Photo for 36 years, retiring in 1969. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and active in her church circle. Lena was a longtime member of PEO, the Kinney Pioneer Museum, AARP and Coachman Campers. Lena and Safford sponsored the Cerro Gordo County Amateur Photography Contest at MacNider Art Museum for many years.
Lena is survived by her children, Howard Lock and special friend, Melode Balek, of Nora Springs and Virginia "Ginger" Lafferty of Plymouth, Minn. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Mike Hebel and wife, Kristi, and their sons, Austin and Logan, of Ankeny; Kristine Larson and husband, Gregg, and their sons, Charlie and Alex, of Richfield, Minn.; Melinda Bonfig and husband, Mike, and their daughter, Loren Marie, of Savage, Minn.; her sisters, Marie Vierkant of Jacksonville, Texas, and Lydia Hemmes of Hampton; and her brother, Andrew Pals, and wife, Lucille, of Meservey. Lena was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Safford, and two brothers, Fred and Hank Pals. Major Erickson Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.
