THORNTON — Leann Mullaney Jurgens, 48, of Thornton, died Monday (Dec, 22, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Meservey Reformed Church with the Rev. Rodney Meester officiating. Interment will be in Meservey Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, 107 N. Second St. in Thornton.

Leann Marie Jurgens was born May 1, 1955, in Mason City, a daughter of Donald E. Mullaney and Joan Gribben Mullany. She graduated from Newman High School in 1973 and graduated from La’James College of Cosmetology in Mason City where she also was an instructor until 1978. In 1975 Leann married Mark Bosma. To this union one daughter, Alana was born. In 1978, Leann moved to Des Moines where she then managed La’James College in Des Moines. On March 1, 1986 Leann was united in marriage with Dean E. Jurgens at the Meservey Reformed Church. They made their home in Meservey until 1997. Leann had her own salon in Thornton, “Leann’s Studio,” from 1987 until 2001 when she retired due to her health. She was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2000. Leann was a member of the Meservey Reformed Church and served as youth group sponsor for three years. She was dedicated to her business and her clients. She loved to decorate her home for the holidays as well as gardening and enjoyed birds and her flowers. Outings with her friends and neighbors gave her joy but she really loved her family and made everyone she touched feel special.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Dean Jurgens, of Thornton; daughter, Alana (Shelby) Steenhard, of Thornton; step-daughters: Elizabeth Whittington, of Norwalk, Alyssa (Jay) Clausen, of Mason City, and Amanda Jurgens, of Nora Springs; granddaughter: Isabella Whittington; parents: Donald Mullaney, of Mason City and Joan Mullaney, of Mason City; brothers and sisters: Patrick Mullaney, of Jacksonville, Ark.; Joe (Kim) Mullaney, of LeGrand, Christy (Scott) Engebretson, of Thornton, Michelle (Brian) Loterbauer, of Mason City, Lisa Hegland, of Mason City; mother and father-in-law, Calvin and Dorothy Jurgens, of Thornton; sisters and brothers-in-law: Evanette (Darwin) Broek, of Hospers, Darlene (Ivan) Wiersma, of Cherokee, Kevin (Nan) Jurgens, Thornton, Rosalind (Phil) Markwardt, of Thornton; and many nieces and nephews. Leann is preceded in death by one brother, Mark Edward Mullaney; one niece, Amanda Nauman; and her paternal and maternal grandparents. Retz-Grarup Funeral Home.
