DURHAM, NC -- Dr. Carol Faith Hoover, 87, daughter of the late Calvin Bryce and Faith Miriam Sprole Hoover, died September 12, 2008, at Hillcrest Convalescent Center. Dr. Hoover was born January 24, 1921 in Eagle Grove, Iowa. She relocated at a young age to Durham, where she attended the Watts Street School and graduated from Durham High School. She received her undergraduate degree from Duke University, her Masters degree from UNC-Chapel Hill, and obtained her Ph.D. from Catholic University in Washington, DC. For most of her life, she lived in the Washington, DC area where she was employed with the National Institute of Mental Health as a psychiatric social worker involved in twin studies. In addition to her professional work, she was very active as a writer of short stories and plays. To encourage other writers, she founded Ariadne Press with her daughter.

Dr. Hoover is survived by her daughter, Sheila Hoffman; grandchildren, Traci Leigh Hoffman, Laura Leigh Hoffman; nephew, Alan Schrack; niece, Bonnie Schrack; and her brother-in-law, Roald A. Schrack. A graveside service will be held Monday, September 15, at 2 p.m. at Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive visitors Sunday afternoon from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home.
