BRITT, Iowa — Laura Baade, 88, of Britt passed away Monday (May 29, 2006) at Westview Care Center in Britt. Memorial services for Laura Baade will be held at 10:30 a.m. on today, June 2, 2006, at the First Lutheran Church in Britt with Janelle Siffring AiM officiating. Laura’s body was donated to the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the memorial service at the church today.

Laura, the daughter of Fred and Freida Steinberg Kahlstorf, was born Nov. 6, 1917, near Kanawha, Iowa. She attended grade school in Miller and Hayfield, graduating from Garner High School in 1935. After graduating, Laura helped people in their homes while she attended nursing classes. On May 5, 1940, Laura married William Baade and the two made their home in Britt. She was a homemaker taking care of her family. Laura worked as a nurse’s aide at the Hancock County Hospital for 22 years where she spent most of her time in the nursery. Laura wrote and recited poetry throughout her life. She loved the outdoors, taking care of her garden, stopping to appreciate a beautiful bird or tree, hitting the streets for the Red Feather Campaign and being a Girl Scout Leader. Laura could do anything crafty, crocheting, needlework or needlepoint. She was a shy woman, but was willing to do anything for anyone. Laura enjoyed traveling to new places and loved to fly because seeing the clouds reminded her of the way heaven may look. Family was very important to Laura and she loved her children, granddaughter, nieces and nephews very much. Laura was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Britt and the FLCW. She was very active in helping teach Sunday school, starting the Junior Lutherans, and was constantly volunteering in the church and community.

Laura is survived by two daughters: Shirley Olson of Britt and Sharon Baade of Waterbury, Vt.; granddaughter, Sara Olson of Britt; two brothers: Harold Kahlstorf of Britt and Donald Kahlstorf and his wife, Elda, of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters: Edna Fisher of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mildred Sonerholm of Klamath Falls, Ore.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons and one daughter, all in infancy; son-in-law, Robert Olson; brother, Robert Kahlstorf; and two sisters: Gertrude Mortenson and Donna Kahlstorf.
