Altoona, Iowa--- Leonard Arthur Sheldon was born in Trenton, Nebraska on January 30, 1922 and departed this life in Mesa, Arizona on June 18, 2003 at the age of 81 years, 4 months and 19 days. Len was baptized and joined the Methodist Church in Trenton, Nebraska at an early age. At the time of his passing he was a member of the Altoona Methodist Church. Len grew up on a farm in Trenton, Nebraska and moved with his parents and brother to a farm in Lucas County, Iowa at the completion of high school. He married Dorotha Niswender on June 30, 1944. They have one daughter, Dixie Lundquist of Chandler, Arizona and a son, L. G. Sheldon of Altoona, Iowa. Len spent 40 months with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He entered the business world immediately following his service to our country, first in Chariton with Skelly Oil. His next business venture was a Dodge and Plymouth dealer in Chariton. In Belmond, he owned and operated a Chevrolet dealership for eight years before moving to Oskaloosa where he owned and operated the Chevrolet dealership. The remainder of his 20 business years were spent operating the Union 76 Truckstop in Altoona. He was a member of many service organizations, including King David Masonic Lodge, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine in Altoona, the Altoona Chamber of Commerce and a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. Len and Dorotha enjoyed their retirement years. They remember many fun times with the Newmar Club, traveling in their motor home to rallies and other trips.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Dorotha of 59 years his daughter and son-in-law, Dixie and Bruce Lundquist; son, L. G. Sheldon; grandsons, Adam and Caleb Lundquist as well as his brother, Paul Sheldon and a host of former co-workers and friends. There will be a Memorial service on July 3, 2003 at Altoona Funeral Home. Friends may call the funeral home for service time. A reception will follow at the United Methodist Church.Memorials may be made to Za-Ga-Zig Shrine or Shriner's Crippled Children.
