David Courter Dies Suddenly

David Courter, and old soldier, so well and favorably known in this community [Webster City, Iowa], died suddenly at the home of A. C. Doolittle, in Blairsburg township, at an early hour Thursday morning [May 20, 1897]. In company with his wife Mr. Courter was visiting with friends in the neighborhood of their old home, and was at Mr. Doolittle's when the sudden summons came. As is well known, Mr. Courter had been in poor health for several years past, but for the past few days seemed unusually cheerful and good spirited. On the evening before his death he ate a hearty supper and chatted and visited with the friends about him until bedtime, and seemed to be feeling better than usual at the time of retiring. At about 2 o'clock in the morning Mrs. Courter was awakened by the unnatural breathing of her husband, and immediately arose to investigate the cause. By the time she had secured a light and returned to his bedside she was startled to find that the vital spark had fled; that her husband was dead, having passed peacefully away. The remains were bought down to the Courter home by John S. Thompson next morning. The funeral service were held at the home at 1 p.m. Saturday, and the remains laid at rest in the Cass Center cemetery. David Courter was a kindly natured, upright, good man, whose later years were full of pain and sickness as a result of his service to his country on the field of battle. He died in his 56th year, mourned by a devoted wife and many sorrowing friends, who have the sympathy of all who know them in their affliction.
