Delbert Claus Thomsen was born February 23, 1917, at Lake Preston, South Dakota, to Claus and Eva (Trenary) Thomsen. Delbert was schooled near Lake Preston and moved to Iowa in 1934. He farmed near West Bend where he met Elizabeth K. Studer. The two were married on September 14, 1940, at Ruthven, Iowa. The couple spent time in Gilmore City, Dows and Irvington before residing in Algona since 1987.

Delbert enjoyed watching sports on TV, gardening, talking politics, and hunting and trapping when he was younger, but his greatest enjoyment came from spending time with his grandchildren. Delbert and Betty also enjoyed spending time in Arizona visiting their daughters Darlene and Donna. Delbert died on Monday, April 30, 2007, at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City at the age of 90.

Survivors include his wife Betty of Algona, son Jim of Fairfax, Iowa, daughters, Donna Treganza and Darlene and husband Bob Thomsen-Schwirian, all of Peoria, Arizona, as well as nine grandchildren, Laura, Brian, Shelby, Matthew, Joshua, Brendon, Aubrey, Debra and Darwin and five great grandchildren, Christine, Terence, Austin, Renee and Claire. Also surviving are two sisters Evelyn Fisher of Whittemore, Iowa, and Ella Schneider of West Bend, Iowa. Delbert was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Dorthea Slivnik in Dec. 2001, two infant sons, Ronald and Daniel, daughter-in-law, Marilyn, two brothers, Nick and Eldon as well as two sisters, Mary Thomsen and Ruby Morris.
