Lakota, IALawrence Clinton Lewis was born July 17, 1918 in Woolstock, Iowa, son of Franklin and Elizabeth (Jones) Lewis. He was the youngest of six children. In 1921, his family moved to their farm southwest of Lakota. Lawrence lived his entire life on the home place farming with his brother Howard. Lawrence was married to Ruth Ann Cook on December 4, 1950, in Albert Lea, Minnesota.
He was a very active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lakota, where he served as a trustee, usher, and bell ringer for many years. He loved to help out wherever he could. In November, 2003 he was honored as a 72 year member of the church. Lawrence also served on the Kossuth County Extension board for many years and served on the Maple Hill Cemetery Board for 33 years. Lawrence enjoyed his vegetable garden and loved to have people stop by to help themselves to his products. During the summer months, he could be seen at local parades, along with his life-long friends, Irvin Koppen and Elmer Haas. They enjoyed that Lakota train and made sure Lakota was represented. For years, his faithful dog and companion Bonnie traveled with him especially enjoying going to Ledyard to visit David Winter at the Country Store.Lawrence died Friday, May 7, 2004, at St. Lukes Lutheran Home in Blue Earth, Minnesota at the age of 85. His days at the care center were made easier with the help of the caring staff, and faithful family, friends, and clergy who came to visit. He also enjoyed being in charge of the care center’s guinea pigs and visiting with the therapy dog, Bailey. Lawrence will be missed by his two daughters, Pat Ellefson and her husband Tom, of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Connie Berg and her husband Mickey of Lakota; two grandsons, Chris Berg and his wife Kristy, of Rochester, Minnesota and Dillon Ellefson and his wife Christina of Moscow, Idaho; and two great-grandchildren, Abbi and Max Berg both of Rochester, Minnesota. He is also survived by two sisters, Fern Hassebroek of Del Ray Beach, Florida and Mary Jane Brack of Titonka; seven nieces and nephews; and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Virgil, Hugh, and Howard.
