Fort Dodge Messenger, IowaEAGLE GROVE - Ellen Marie Hackbarth, the daughter of Ken and Edith (VanHorn) Soppeland, was born on December 29, 1945, in Humboldt, Iowa. She was raised and educated in the area of her birth. Ellen also attended Cosmetology School. On June 23, 1973, Ellen was united in marriage to David E. Hackbarth, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove. The couple made their home on an acreage outside of Eagle Grove. Ellen worked as a beauty operator for many years in Eagle Grove and also for the Meredith Corporation in Clarion before purchasing the Twiins Shoppe in Eagle Grove in 1991. Ellen truly enjoyed her customers or as she preferred to call them "friends" she served and met over the years while operating the Twiins Shoppe.
Ellen was a member of Samuel Lutheran Church where she served as Sunday School Superintendent, taught Sunday school and coordinated the Christmas programs. She also served as a Girl Scout Leader and T-Ball, Softball and Little League Baseball coach. Ellen was the Eagle Grove High School "After Prom" coordinator for nearly 30 years, and was honored as the After Prom Queen in 2008. She also donated much of her time working on the committee for "Relay For Life". In 1998, Ellen received a "Community Service Volunteer" Award given to her by Gov. Tom Vilsack and in 2004 she received Eagle Grove's "Working Woman of the Year" Award. Ellen was named the "2008 Homecoming Parade Grand Marshall," which her family will be representing. Ellen enjoyed gardening, flowers, scrapbooking and making blankets. She truly loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and attending all of their school and sporting events.
Ellen passed away on Thursday, September 4, 2008, at her daughter's home in Spirit Lake, Iowa, at the age of 62 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; father and mother-in-law, Herb and Mabel Hackbarth, sister-in-law, Barbara Hackbarth and son-in-law, Michael Omvig. Survivors include her husband, Dave Hackbarth of Eagle Grove, children: Cindy Hilpipre and husband Tim of Spirit Lake, Mike Hackbarth and wife Jen of Spencer, Amy Pederson and husband Scott of Badger, Mitch Hackbarth and wife Angie of Pocahontas and Bobbie Omvig of Eagle Grove; 19 grandchildren; brother, Bob Hanes and wife Bernie of Ankeny and sisters, MaryJane Jensen and husband Ron of Eagle Grove and MaryAnn Johnson of Humboldt.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, September 8, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove with Pastor Stan Peterson of Samuel Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation is Sunday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
