ROCK ISLAND, IL - Donald D. Goodwin, 76, of Rock Island, Ill., left his loving family on Wednesday, August 27, 2008, at Trinity Pathway Hospice, Bettendorf, after a two-year battle with a genetic liver disease. A memorial visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until noon on Tuesday, September 2, 2008, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island, where a time for remembering Don will be at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Trinity Pathway Hospice at Trinity at Terrace Park, Bettendorf.

Don was born in Wellman, Iowa, on February 7, 1932, to John and Nellie Stillings Goodwin. He married Gretchen J. Struck of Clarion, Iowa, on February 14, 1957. Don graduated from Wellman High School and subsequently earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa), a Master of Arts degree in education from the University of Iowa and an Education Specialist degree from Western Illinois University. Don also served nine years with the Iowa National Guard. He spent 32 years teaching and in elementary school administration, retiring as the principal of Audubon Elementary School in Rock Island. Don's hobbies included fishing, hunting, bridge, golfing and traveling.

Don is survived by his wife, Gretchen; two children (and spouses), Steve (Leila) Goodwin, of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, and Julie (Scott) Dahl, of Rock Island; and grandsons, Jack Searle and Cody Dahl. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and six brothers.
