September 2, 2008Bernard "Bernie" C. Black, 76, Belmond, died August 25, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City. Funeral services were held August 28 at the Belmond United Methodist Church with Pastors Mike and Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial with military honors was in the Belmond Cemetery.
Bernard Charles, the son of Raymond and Helen Ritchie Black, was born October 5, 1931 at Battle Creek, MI. He graduated in 1949 from Battle Creek Central High School and began working at Eaton. Working for the Eaton Corporation was a legacy the Black family for over 100 years. Bernie was drafted into the United States Army in 1951 and discharged in 1953. In 1954 Bernard married Margaret "Peggy" Paro. They first made their home in Battle Creek, and later in Kearney, NE, Mexico City, and finally Belmond. Bernie retired from Eaton as an engineer in 1993. Bernie enjoyed golfing, car racing and watching sports. His favorite team was the Detroit Tigers. Spending time with his family -- especially his grandchildren -- was what Bernie loved most. He attended all of their sporting events and activities. Bernie was an active member of the Belmond United Methodist Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters. Bernie is survived by his wife; his children Tina (Tim) Hieb of Alda, NE and David (Marlene) Black of Belmond; grandchildren Amanda, Chelsea, Dylan, Amanda, David, Cody and Chris; great grandchildren Dominic, Natalie, Logan and Delaney; sister Geraldine; brother Raymond (Betty) of Battle Creek; and a brother-in-law Melvin Hinkle.
