Memorial services for William H. Metcalfe, 69, of Killeen, will be at a later date. Metcalfe died July 1, 2008, at his home in Killeen. He was born Jan. 18, 1939, in Clarion, Iowa, to William C. and Marie (Tague) Metcalfe. Among the numerous accomplishments in his life, he served in the U.S. Army in the early '60s as a medical technician and an operating room technician. He retired from the Union Pacific Railroad as a railroad engineer. He was best known as Flint Knapper Extraordinaire. Metcalfe was also a nuclear certified pipefitter and welder; a ferrier and a gunsmith. He held a private pilot's license; he was an accomplished marksman; an avid hunter and outdoorsman; teacher and storyteller. He was a Shiner and had lived in the area for the past 25 years. The Rev. Metcalfe was an ordained minister of the Universal Church.

Metcalfe was preceded in death by his father in 2003 and by his wife, retired Col. Martha E. Metcalfe, on June 1, 2008. Survivors include his daughters, Kerrie and Jessie Metcalfe, both of Killeen; his mother, Marie Metcalfe, and a brother, Ken Metcalfe, both of Chicago; three grandchildren, William, Samantha and Kaelyn Hiltzman; and his mother-in-law, Leola Saunders of Killeen. Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen is handling the arrangements.
