11 September 1822 --- 2 March 1898

Belmond Herald, Belmond, Iowa
16 March 1898

Henry Jacob Luick was born in Stuttgart, Germany, Sept. 11, 1822 and came to Washtenaw County, Michigan in 1832 with his parents who were of Lutheran faith. At the age of 20, he was married to Melissa Overacker. Nine children were born to them, six of whom still live - Michael, Sylvester, Louis, Frank, Charles, Mary, Barbara, Francis, and Rosella, the latter three of whom passed on before, Francis and Rosella dying in childhood. Barbara (Mrs. Hatt) dying a few years ago. In 1853, Henry removed to Iowa, stopping near Franklin Grove. At this time, Belmond was not thought of. He was among the first settlers in Wright County, but few of whom remain to tell the story of privation and toil necessary as pioneers. In 1865, he was married to Mrs. Lydia Johnson and moved to Mahaska County. Ten years they lived in Oskaloosa, returning to Belmond in 1869, where they have since resided. In his younger and more useful days, Mr. Luick was a prosperous and influential man, holding at one time the position of County Judge for several years. His death has been so closely linked with the history of Wright County, that by his death, another of the old landmarks disappears. For the past several years, he had suffered intensely, much of the time, from that dread destroyer known as Bright's disease of the kidneys. Had his constitution not been uncommonly strong, accompanied by great will power, he must have succumbed to his malady long ago. As it was, however, after a few weeks of intensified suffering, his spirit was set free on the morning of the second of March, 1898.

Besides a faithful, patient, loving wife, who nursed him through his trying illness, he leaves a host of relatives and friends to mourn his loss, this being the first death in his immediate family for over 40 years. Four brothers and a sister of this family were permitted to follow him to his last resting place. The burial took place from the home at 2:30 Thursday, and all that was mortal of this loved one was laid to rest to await the Resurrection morn. Funeral services were held at the Congregational Church by Rev. J. D. Sands at 3:30 the same day.
