Sister Marilyn Whitty, RSM, formerly Sister Mary Louis, 59, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1993, in Iowa Methodist Hospital, Des Moines, following a short illness. Teahen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial Mass: 3 p.m. today, St. John Catholic Church, Clarion, where friends may call after 1 p.m. The Rev. Wayne Droessler will officiate. Mass of the Resurrection: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sacred Heart Convent Chapel, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. James Duster of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, Webster City. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Monday at the chapel, where a prayer service begins at 7.
In addition to the sisters of Mercy, she is survived by her mother, Margaret Whitty of Clarion; two brothers, Don of Clarion and Tom of Belmond; and two sisters, Margaret Ehmke of Issaquah, Wash., and Joan Kelley of San Carlos, Calif.
Born March 4, 1934, in Clarion, to Thomas and Margaret Martin Whitty, she entered the Sisters of Mercy on Jan. 16, 1957, and professed perpetual vows on July 16, 1962. She graduated from Mount Mercy College and received her M.A. degree from Loras College in 1974. Sister Marilyn taught grade school in Waterloo, Anamosa and Decorah. She was principal at St. Joseph's School, Marion, from 1971 to 1979; St. Cecilia's School, Ames, from 1979 to 1991; and most recently was principal at St. Thomas Aquinas School, Webster City.
