Dorothy E. "Betty" Knight, 84, of 3239 Washington St., Iowa City, died Sunday, June 3, 2007, at Solon Nursing Care Center in Solon following complications of a stroke. Memorial services: 11 a.m. Friday, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Iowa City, by the Rev. Karl Divine-Koch. (Sunday parking ordinance will be in effect for the streets around the church). Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Betty's memory to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church or Iowa City Hospice.

Betty was born Dorothy Elizabeth Swanson on May 6, 1923, in Morning Sun, Iowa, the daughter of Siqfreid and Nina (Siverly) Swanson. She graduated from high school in Alexander, Iowa, in 1941. On Jan. 14, 1945, she married Russell B. Knight at Scott Air Base in Scottfield, Ill. Betty and her family moved to Iowa City in 1958 from Ackley, Iowa. Here in Iowa City she worked for the University of Iowa for over 20 years in a number of departments, including personnel, geography, the registration center, and Quill & Scroll, retiring in 1988. She had been an active member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Iowa City and her women's circle. Betty enjoyed many things in life, her friends in the First Wednesday Club, her lifelong passion of music, visiting the ocean and traveling the world with Russell, but most important and dear to her was her love of family. As far as Betty was concerned she had it all, the love of a devoted husband and family.

Betty's family includes her husband of 61 years, Russell; children, Bev Knight of Shelburne, Vt., Marty Knight and wife Barb of Las Vegas, Bill Knight and wife Karen and their family, Robert, Kristin and Scott of Iowa City, Jacque Robinson and husband Chris of Portland, Ore.; and Betty's sister, Delores Erickson and husband Robert of Maquoketa. She was preceded in death by her sister, Virginia Hanze.

Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Betty's family and her services.
