Mason City Globe GazetteKANAWHA - Bonnita V. Nelson, 93, passed away Saturday (Sept. 25, 1999) at the Kanawha Community Home in Kanawha. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Kanawha, with Pastor Susan Detwiler officiating. Burial will be at Amsterdam Township Cemetery near Kanawha. Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home in Kanawha and one hour prior to services at the church.
Bonnita, the daughter of George and Violet Raver Morgan, was born July 17, 1906, in Grand Junction. At an early age, she moved to Britt, where she attended school. Bonnita graduated from Britt High School in 1925 and then attended the Iowa State Teachers College for two years. She taught school in Bayard, Corwith and Kanawha. Bonnita was united in marriage with Archie Nelson on Sept. 29, 1933, at Galena, Ill. The couple made their home in Kanawha. Bonnita continued to teach until the birth of their son and was a devoted housewife and mother. She taught special needs children in the 1960s. Bonnita resided in Kanawha her entire married life, entering the Kanawha Community Home in 1997. Bonnita enjoyed crafts and painting and was an excellent artist. She helped many years with the Kanawha Labor Day Celebration, directing the event in 1950. She participated in various bridge circles. Bonnita was a member of the United Methodist Church of Kanawha.
Survivors include her son, Donald Nelson, of West Des Moines; and three grandchildren, Nancy Fischer and her husband, Leon, of West Des Moines, Julie Williamson and her husband, Kevin, of Windsor Heights, and Rebecca Nelson, of Des Moines; eight great-grandchildren, Jessica, Jennifer, Jamie, Ashley, Brandon, Nicholas, Katy and Issac. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Archie; grandson, Michael Nelson; one sister, Erma Morgan; and one brother, Dr. H.R. Morgan.
