KANAWHA - A. Everett Wicks, 86, passed away Thursday (June 17, 1999) North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason City. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kanawha Lutheran Church with Pastor Keith Sievers officiating. Interment will be in Amsterdam Township Cemetery, Kanawha. Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at Ewing Dugger Funeral Home, Kanawha, and one hour prior to the service at the church Tuesday.

A. Everett Wicks was born Jan. 8, 1913, in Kanawha to Nettie Erickson and Cryder Wicks. Everett graduated from Kanawha High School in 1931. He and Viola Erickson were united in marriage on Aug. 9, 1936; farmed in Story County; and in 1951 moved to a farm near Kanawha where they resided for many years. In 1974 they retired and moved to town. Ev and Vi celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August of 1986 and Viola passed away in October of that year. Everett had been a resident of the Kanawha Community Home since 1997. Everett will be remembered for his dedication to his wife and family, his respect for farming and love of the land, his wise business judgment and his curiosity about current events. He enjoyed people, sharing his stories of the past with passion and a twinkle in his eye. He was a living history book, as his recollection of details of events brought the past to life. His sense of humor was woven artistically through each tale he told. Upon retirement from farming, he readily became active in sports, enjoying bowling, golf, and his all-time favorite, billiards. In later years he added bingo to his list of activities.
In addition he made time each day for his "coffee buddies," also known as "the boys." Solving the world's problems while continually trying to control the weather to ensure a bountiful crop became intertwined with happy and jovial banter among genuine, good friends.

Survivors include Everett's six children and their families, Sheryl and Burrell Buren, Britt, Jan Wicks, Mason City, Delilah Stewart, Lakewood, Calif., Valerie and Ronald Trca, Spokane, Wash., Lana and Don Gray, Laverne, Calif., and Kevin and Trudy Wicks, Reno, Nev.; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Carole Basler, Thousand Oaks, Calif., LaVonne Nosbusch, Los Angeles, Calif., and Maxine and Paul Maland, Charles City; and one brother, Ray and Imogene Wicks, Belmond. Everett will be sadly missed by his many friends and his loving family. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Viola; a grandchild; and a brother.
