Dr. Sprugel, 76, passed away Friday, May 12, 2006, at his home. Private graveside services for Dr. Charles Sprugel were held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Williams Cemetery, with military honors provided by American Legion Post # 633. Memorials may be directed to Friends of Beeds Lake, 200 Moorhead Avenue, Iowa Falls, Iowa 50126. The Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Charles William Sprugel was born January 30, 1930, at Williams, Iowa, the son of George Sprugel Sr., and Francis Emily [Strong] Sprugel. He graduated from the Williams High School with the class of 1947. He served with the United States Navy from 1951-1952 taking basic training at San Diego, California. He attended and graduated from Corpsman School, Bainbridge, Maryland and was stationed as an ENT Hospital Corpsman for 16 months at Bethesda National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland.
On August 24, 1952, Charles was united in marriage to Gladys Marie Mayhew in the United Methodist Church, Goodell, Iowa. Born to this union were two daughters: Vicki Lee and Beth Marie. He served as a rural mail carrier for three years for the Williams Post Office while taking college courses at Ellsworth College and Iowa State College. He was accepted as a student in the College of Veterinary Medicine, Iowa State College in September of 1957, graduating with D. V. M. degree from Iowa State College in May, 1960. He began his practice of Veterinary Medicine in Latimer, Iowa in 1960 until November 1965. From November 1965 until June 1966 he served the State Dept. of Agriculture as a District Veterinarian in Northeast Iowa counties. From June 1966 to Jan. 1967 he served as Assistant State Veterinarian, State Capital Building, Des Moines, Iowa. From January to April 1967 he owned and operated a general small and large animal practice in Iowa Falls, Iowa. and then did clinical research at Diamond Laboratories, Des Moines. From May 1968 until his retirement in June 2004 he owned and operated a small and large animal practice in Dumont and Hampton, Iowa. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Iowa Falls and a member of the Latimer American Legion. Charles was very active, instrumental and a charter member of the Friends of Beeds Lake, Hampton, Iowa.
Charles W. Sprugel is survived by his wife: Gladys of Iowa Falls; his daughter: Vicki Sprugel of Marshalltown, Iowa; his daughter and son-in-law: Beth and Brent Hendricks of Grinnell, Iowa; two grandsons: Isaac and Zachary Hendricks of Grinnell; two sisters: Martha Thompson of Johnston, Iowa, Myrtle Hollingsworth of Phoenix, Arizona; one brother: John E. Sprugel and wife Lovice of Liberty, Missouri; one sister-in-law: Catherine Sprugel of Seattle, Washington; one brother-in-law: Edgar J. Mayhew of Belmond, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents: one grandson: Justin Hendricks; his brother: George Sprugel, Jr.; his sister: Alice P. Ose; and three brothers-in-law: Vernon Ose, Archie Thompson, and Wally Hollingsworth.
