BONNEY LAKE, Wash. - Al D. Mayhew, 80, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, in Bonney Lake. Born Dec. 16, 1921, in Goodell, Iowa, to Albannia V. and Madge Jennison Mayhew. Al grew up in Iowa. At age 16, he and his family moved to Rockford, Ill. He graduated from Harlem High School in 1939. While a sophomore, he met the love of his life, Helen, while attending church. They were married June 21, 1941. Al joined the Army Air Corps in 1942, and fought during World War II as a B-17 pilot based in England. He retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserves in 1972, with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Al worked 26 years at Sundstrand Corp., retiring in 1973. He was a member of Kirkland-Bellevue Leks, Puyallup (Wash.) VFW and Puyallup American Legion. Al and Helen lived in Bellevue for 45 years, moving to Bonney Lake six years ago to be close to their family. Al was an avid fisherman and loved RVing. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 60 years, Helen son, Alvin "Skip" D. Mayhew Jr. and daughter-in-law, Pamela granddaughter, Wendy Mayhew, all of Bonney Lake brother, Darwin (Lois) Mayhew sister, Betty (Clyde) Hutchison sister-in-law, Donna Baggins of Billings, Mont. numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in Powers Funeral Home, 320 W. Pioneer Ave., Puyallup. Graveside services, with military honors, at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, in Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, Wash.
