Dr. Don Holmstrom, 77, of West Union, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, April 12, 2008, at his home. Don Holmstrom, was born on July 27, 1930. He was the Superintendent at the Clarion Community Schools from 1970-73. Don is survived by his wife, Phyllis; one son, Darrell and wife of Chugiak, Arkansas; and one daughter, Ann Holmstrom of Wheaton, Illinois.

Donald Holmstrom (1930-2008)

WEST UNION -- Donald Holmstrom, 77, of West Union, died at home Saturday, April 12. He was born July 27, 1930, in Buchanan County, son of Edward and Mata Deuhr Holmstrom. He married Phyllis Page on May 20, 1951, at Zion Lutheran Church, West Union. Mr. Holmstrom graduated from Maynard High School in 1947 and received a bachelor's degree from Upper Iowa University, Fayette, in 1950. He graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in 1958 with a master's degree in educational administration, and earned a Ph.D. in educational administration at the University of Iowa in 1970.

He taught math at Oran High School for a year and at North Fayette High School from 1954 to 1965; was high school principal for a year at Paullina; was superintendent at Eastwood Community Schools for two years in Correctionville and Cushing; and after receiving a Ph.D., became superintendent at Clarion Community Schools, Clarion. In 1973, he moved to Illinois and served as superintendent at the Southwestern School District in Piasa, Ill. He also worked at J. I. Case in Des Moines; was assistant superintendent of business at Fenton High School, Bensenville, Ill., and was a Realtor in west suburban Chicago.

Survived by: his wife; a son, Darrell (Kit) of Chugiak, Ark.; a daughter, Ann of Wheaton, Ill.; a granddaughter; a sister, Shirley (Dale) Alshouse of Oelwein; and two brothers, Lyle (Gloria) of Waterloo and Leon (Marjorie) of Nisswa, Minn. Preceded in death by: an infant son and a daughter; a brother, LaVerne; and a sister, Gladys Keeter.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church, West Union, with burial in West Union Cemetery. Public visitation from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union.
