Maxine Maland, 90, of Charles City, died on Tuesday, January 3, 2006, at the Floyd County Hospital. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 7, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Charles City, with Revs. Dennis Niezwaag and David Werges officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.
Maxine Gladys, the daughter of Cryder and Nettie Wicks, was born on September 26, 1915. She graduated from the Kanawha High School in 1933, where she played basketball, acted in school plays, sang in musicals, co-directed the local 4-H club, taught Sunday School, and was pianist at the St. John's Lutheran Church. She received her teaching certificate at the University of Northern Iowa and taught in the country school house near her home. On June 23, 1940, Maxine married Kanawha resident and recent graduate of the ISU Veterinary College, Dr. Paul Maland. They settled in Charles City. Maxine was very active in the community, committees at the St. John Lutheran Church, a Sunday School and Bible School Teacher, WELCA, PTA, Boy and Girl Scouts, hospital auxiliary, reading assistant at Jefferson School, P.E.O., and Women's Club. Her work as a hospice volunteer was very important to Maxine, and she and her husband were recognized as Hospice Volunteers of the Year in 1993. She was nominated for State of Iowa Mother in 1974 for her role as mentor to a young mothers group. She was known for her kringla, raspa kumla, apple pie and potato salad. She attended many concerts and sporting events involving her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Maxine was preceded in death by her brothers, Orville, Everett and Raymond Wicks; and nephew, Randy Wicks. Survivors include her husband; daughters, Judy and Kip Hauser, Laurie, Rebecca and Stephen; Janet and Roger Hanson of Fenton, Missouri, Kristen and Kurt; Jeanine Maland of Asheville, North Carolina and Molly; sons, Jim and K. D. Maland of Brattleboro, Vermont, Emily and Tyler; Jerry and Jane Maland of Harrison, Arkansas, Justin, Jenny, Jeff and Jessica; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lavonne Nosbusch of Los Angeles and Carole Basler of Thousand Oaks, California; and sister-in-law, Imogene Wicks of Belmond.
