Ernest John Werling was born May 17, 1908 in Armstrong, Iowa, the son of George and Emma (Hinz) Werling. He moved with his parents to a farm south of Renwick, Iowa, when he was one year old. He attended country school near Goldfield and was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Renwick. After his schooling, he farmed in the Goldfield, Livermore and Hardy areas before settling in Renwick.
On January 23, 1926, Ernest was united in marriage to Dora Bartzen in Renwick, and they were blessed with two children: Earl and LaVonne. After their marriage Ernest farmed in the Hardy and Renwick areas until retiring in 1995. He continued to live on the farm until 2001, when he moved into Renwick where he lived until January of 2003 when he became a resident of Long Term Care at the Humboldt Hospital. Ernest loved horses and ponies and raised them for years, as well as making harnesses, halters and ropes for the ponies. He was a past member of the American Cream Horse Association and the American Shetland Pony Club. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Renwick.
Ernest died on Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at the Long Term Care Facility in the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital at the age of 95. Services were held Saturday, May 24. The Rev. James little officiated. Casket bearers were Ron Oberhelman, Dale Kraft, Jon Nissen, Leonard Kiley, Ellis Macha and Larry Rob. The burial was at Elmwood Cemetery in Renwick. Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf were in charge of services.
He is survived by his son, Earl Werling and wife Marianne of Park Rapids, Minn.; his daughter LaVonne and husband Everett Kraft of Renwick; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dora on June 28, 1992; seven sisters and five brothers.
