AUSTINVILLE, IA -Angeline J. DeVries, 93, of Austinville, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Services were held Monday, April 2 at the Christian Reformed Church with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, both at Austinville. Rev. George McGuire officiated.
Angeline was born Nov. 18, 1907, at Kanawha, to Hensman and Anna Johnson Smidt. She attended rural school and at age 13 moved with her family to Austinville where she completed her education. On March 25, 1931, she married Harm DeVries at the Christian Reformed Church parsonage in Aplington. They farmed at Aredale and Aplington and in 1944 they moved into Austinville and purchased a livestock buying and trucking company that they operated together. She sold Avon products for 17 years and retired at the age of 89. She was a member of the Christian Reformed Society and was active in the Ladies Society. Her hobbies were crocheting afghans and other handiwork.
She is survived by two sons, Harold and wife, Carolyn, of Austinville, and Duane and wife, Marilyn, of Osage; three daughters, Anna Mae Smiens and husband, Epp, Freda Harms and husband, Orlynn, and Carol Luchtenburg and husband, Wendell, all of Aplington; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 6 great-stepgrandchldren; a sister, Anna Hoffman of Ackley; and a brother-in-law, Jake DeVries, of Aplington. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1970; and seven brothers, Henry, Ubbe, Gerhard, John, Ludwig, Hensman and Angus Smidt. Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington was in charge of arrangements.
