KANAWHA - Gertrude Elaine Hartwig, 70, passed away Friday (Feb. 19, 1999) at her home in Kanawha. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Kanawha, with the Rev. Susan Detwiler officiating. Interment will be in Amsterdam Township Cemetery, Kanawha. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home, Kanawha.

Gert, the daughter of Boyd and Ella Eekhoff Ruter, was born July 1, 1928, on a farm near Kanawha. She attended and graduated from the Kanawha Community School. Gert was united in marriage with Jim Hartwig on Oct. 21, 1947, at the Wright Christian Reformed Church. After their marriage the couple made their home on a farm near Kanawha. They later would move into Kanawha. The couple owned and operated "The Shed" for nearly 23 years. During that time, they catered noon lunches to the employees of Kiefer Built. Gert was a member of the Kanawha United Methodist Church. She enjoyed shopping, dining out and loved to send "notes" to friends and family.

Gert is survived by her daughter, Jodi Spieker and her husband, Dennis, of Garner; a grandson, Jason Spieker; a granddaughter, Jilane Mitchell and her husband, Chad, and their sons, Jacob and Chadwick Mitchell; her daughter, Julie Jordan and her husband, Rick, of Farmers Branch, Texas; grandsons, Kyle and Klint Jordan; a son, Chris Hartwig of Kanawha; a grandson, Shawn Hesley, his wife and two daughters; three granddaughters, Star and Candy Hartwig and Crystal Ramirez and her husband, Mondo, and their daughter, Magdalena; three brothers, Byron Ruter and his wife, Shirley, of Kanawha, Roger Ruter and his wife, Diane, of Springfield, Mo., and Clifford Ruter of Aurora, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim, and one brother, John.
