Herman Christians, son of Nick and Nellie Christians passed away at the Belmond Community Hospital Monday, May 2, 1983 where he had been a patient since Friday, following a heart attack. He was 67 years, 10 months and 26 days of age at the time of his death. Herman was baptized and made profession of faith and was an active member of the Wright Christian Reformed Church near Kanawha, Iowa. He had served on the consistory board and served his church faithfully. He attended the rural schools in Wright County, Iowa. On September 2, 1937 he was united in marriage to Oralene Riekens. They farmed south of Kanawha for 43 years. Two and a half years ago, they moved into their new home in Kanawha, Iowa. He served as president of the Christian School board and the Kanawha Coop Oil Company. He also served on the board of the public school and the Kanawha Community Home. His life was centered around his home and family.
Herman is survived by his wife Oralene of Kanawha, Iowa; two daughters, Mary Lou DeWaard and her husband Gary of Kanawha, Iowa; Sharlene Miedema and her husband Robert of Edgerton, Minnesota; two sons, Jerry and his wife JoAnn Christians, Belmond, Iowa, Roger and his wife Kenna Christians of LaCrosse, Wisconsin; 15 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, 3 brothers, Ed and his wife Minnie Christians of Kanawha, Iowa; Elmer and his wife Marjorie Christians of Kanawha, Iowa; James and his wife Mavis Christians of Woden, Iowa; six sisters, Mrs. John (Tena) Ruter, Mrs. Heis (Tillie) Verbrugge, Mrs. John (Minnie) Rietema, Henrietta Rietema and her husband Arthur, Nettie Assink and her husband Harold, all of Kanawha, Ia., and Marguerite Hansel and her husband Carroll of Rockford, Ill., plus many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
