Fred Rietema, 66, Dies at Kanawha

KANAWHA – Funeral services were held Monday afternoon of this week at the Wright Christian Reformed church for the late Fred Rietema, 66, who died at his home in Kanawha Friday morning, following a heart attack. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife; four daughters: Mrs. Sam Van Otterloo of Rock Valley, Mrs. Ed Christians, Mrs. Harold Pommer of Woden, and Mrs. James DeVries; three sons: John, Art and Clarence Rietema, all of Kanawha, and a great many other relatives and friends. Rev. L. Hofman officiated at the services. Interment was made in the Wright Christian Reformed Cemetery.

Fred Rietema was born in Wright County Dec. 3, 1887, a son to John and Tena Rietema. He spent all his life in Wright county except the last five years, which time he and his wife were living in Kanawha. Mr. Rietema had been ill for the past several years and death came Friday, Dec. 4, as the result of a heart attack. He had reached the age of 66 years and 1 day. On Jan. 7, 1908 Mr. Rietema was united in marriage to Cora Vanden Bosch, the ceremony taking place in Wright county.

Surviving are the wife; four daughters and three sons: (Tena) Mrs. S. VanOtterloo, Rock Valley; John, Art, Clarence, Mrs. Ed. (Minnie) Christians, and Mrs. James (Cornelia) DeVries, all of Kanawha; and Mrs. Henry (Winifred) Pommer of Wesley. There is one brother, Art. Rietema, Sr., Kanawha; a sister, Mrs. Harm Roskamp, Marshalltown, and also twenty-two grandchildren. Preceding Mr. Rietema in death were two infant sons, one grandchild, and a sister, Mrs. Tena Lubben, who died only six weeks ago.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon of last week at the Wright Christian Reformed church where deceased was a long-time member. The Rev. L. Hoffman was in charge of the last rites. Burial was made in the Wright county cemetery.
