Pipestone County Star, Pipestone, MNElla De Poorter, 98, Edgerton, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003 at Edgebrook Care Center in Edgerton. Funeral services were Wednesday, Oct. 1 at First Christian Reformed Church in Edgerton. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery in Edgerton.
Ella De Poorter was born to Chris and Hattie (Eekhoff) Christians on Nov. 2, 1904 in Kanawha, Iowa where she grew up and attended school. When she was about nine years old, her family moved to Edgerton where Ella continued attending rural school. After completing her education, she worked at Jolinks Bakery in Edgerton. On Aug. 20, 1931, she married Peter De Poorter in Edgerton. After they were married, they moved to Pipestone for Peter's employment. In 1947, they moved to a farm north of Edgerton and lived there until 1955 when they moved into Edgerton. In 1970, they moved to California for five years before returning to Edgerton. Peter preceded her in death in 1981. After his death, Ella continued to live in her home. She was admitted to Edgebrook Care Center in Edgerton on Nov. 29, 1996. She was a member of First Christian Reformed Church in Edgerton. She attended Martha Circle at church and was an active participant in the Southwest Christian High School Circles.
She is survived by her daughter, Dot (Henry) Van Essen, Sioux Falls, S.D.; a daughter-in-law, Arlotte De Poorter, Edgerton; seven grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter; her son, Wesley De Poorter; four brothers, Arnold, George, Henry and John; four sisters, Tina, Winifred, Norma and Florence; two infant brothers; one infant sister; and one great-grandchild.
