Grace Veldhouse, 94, buried at Kanawha on Sept. 28, 1994

Funeral services were held for Grace Veldhouse, 94, on Wednesday, September 28, 1994, at the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church. Officiating was Rev. David Daley. Special music included "Safe In The Arms of Jesus" and "Amazing Grace" sung by Berta Rietema and JoAnn Peters. Marilyn DeKruyff was the organist. The casketbearers were Gene Veldhouse, Lee Veldhouse, Richard Veldhouse, Terry Veldhouse, Verlyn Veldhouse and Bruce Ribbens. Interment was at Amsterdam Township Cemetery. The Ewing Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Grace (Abbas) Veldhouse was born to Daniel and Nancy (Christians) Abbas on November 8, 1899, near Kanawha. She lived in and near Kanawha her entire life except for the last eight years, when she resided in Pella, Iowa, four years at Hilltop Manor and four years at the Pella Community Nursing Home. Grace died at the Pella Community Hospital on September 25, 1994. Grace made profession of faith in the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church as a young woman and retained her membership until her death. On February 24, 1924, she married Heiko H. Veldhouse in Kanawha, where they were engaged in business and farming for over 40 years. They had four sons - Heiko G., Daniel, Jay and Ronald.

Her husband, two sons, Heiko G. and Daniel; and a great-grandson, Louis Veldhouse preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were four brothers, Anno, Fred, Chris, and George Abbas and one sister, Faye Swyter. Surviving are her daughter-in-law, C. Ruth Veldhouse of Denver, Colorado; two of her sons and their wives, Jay Veldhouse and his wife, Audry, of Pella, and Ronald Veldhouse of St. Paul, MN; 16 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Tena Peters and Bena Trenary and her husband, Clarence; a brother, Clarence Abbas, and his wife Vera; and one sister-in-law, Alice Abbas, all of Kanawha.

Grace Abbas Veldhouse, 94, of Pella died of a heart ailment Sunday at Pella Community Hospital. Services will be at 1:30 P.M. Wednesday at Kanawha Christian Reformed Church. Burial will be in Amsterdam Township Cemetery at Kanawha. Mrs. Veldhouse was born in Kanawha and lived there all her life until moving to Pella eight years ago. She was a homemaker. Surviving are two sons, Jay of Pella and Ronald of St. Paul, Minn.; two sisters, Tena Peters and Bena Trenary, and a brother, Clarence Abbas, all of Kanawha; 16 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. The family will visit with friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M. today at Ewing Funeral Home in Kanawha. Royce's Funeral Home is handling arrangements in Pella.
